Description
“Island of Sardinia” – Italy
An Inspiration from The Black Stallion Movie 1979
36 x 48 Original Acrylic on Canvas by Barbara Lee Donovan
This work was inspired from The Black Stallion Movie from 1979 filmed mostly on the
Island of Sardinia, Italy. The movie is a tale of a boy with his father on a steam ship that after a sudden fire onboard all are forced to abandon the ship. Somehow the boy (ALEC) is rescued from drowning by the stallion that was onboard as cargo and having a rope tied around him, pulled to safety to a deserted island where the two develop a relationship of trust and survival. A heartfelt story of man and beast.
The painting depicts a beautiful black stallion shaking his head from the long water-logged exhausted swim night while warming himself on the smooth sanded beach. The pink salted red cliffs glisten like diamonds in the sunlight and a distant storm cloud over the water billows high above the cliffs. His tail is up, and he is excited to explore this new and exotic place. With his muzzle to the wet sand, he catches the scent of ghost crabs and a stranger. He is hungry and thirsty. He must find food and a fresh pool of water. The rain was approaching. Alec comes to from a short distance away and sees his hero exploring the beach in excited frustration. Alec’s head hurts and he is afraid but somehow feels comforted by seeing the stallion and knows that together they are not alone.
The original will be on exhibit and available for sale thru THE AMSTERDAM WHITNEY GALLERY in CHELSEA, NEW YORK NY in October 2022
